The force will be with you, always…in various video formats

ewokI am a Star Wars junkie, and in case you haven't heard the news, it was announced that they are releasing the original trilogy in its original state on DVD (before special editions and what not).  And there was much rejoicing (yea.)  But lo, there came an announcement that they were not going to be in 5.1 surround and the picture quality will not be improved (and they were forced to eat Robins' minstrels).  So here's my two cents – First of all, I own five sets of the trilogy in various states and formats, my most prized possesion being the VHS letterboxed pre-special edition version (given to me for free).  As far as picture quality, the beauty of any old film is its aged look and feel.  Fans want to see these films cleaned up to a point beyond how they were originally shown.  It would be like taking Monet's "Water Lilies" and getting rid of the "blurriness".  Leave the movie alone.  I want the colors to be washed out, the picture to be jittery, and you can even have the tracking go bad partway through the movie.  That's how I remember it.

This is quite a up-to-date information. I think I’ll share it on Twitter.
